Sun Xun is one of China’s most exciting young artists, best known for his animations made up of thousands of ink paintings, charcoal drawings and woodcuts. These works raise questions about what we perceive as truth and explore the slippery dynamics of memory, history, culture and politics. His first solo show in Australia was at the MCA. Sun Xun often creates surreal, dark and menacing worlds that are both familiar and strange. The design creates a mood that references these themes. With the use of rich blacks and a contemporary and unique serif typeface the catalogue lets Sun Xun’s work be the main focus. A mix of coated and uncoated paper stocks reference the handmade papers Sun Xun creates (Zhi). The cover is a rich black linen, with a white foil deboss. The design is reversed on the back cover referencing the idea of a ‘parallel world’ that features regularly in his work. The half height dust jacket is on an uncoated stock that shows a 3D still from his animation ‘Time Spy’ adding another textural element to the cover.
